Kūtai / Greenshell™ Mussel

Perna canaliculus

A local delicacy for centuries, New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels (Perna canaliculus) are a good source of protein and are low in fat and calories. As well as being particularly flavoursome, they are also a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids and essential minerals (selenium, iodine and iron) for good health.

Greenshell™ mussels is the trade-marked name of farmed green-lipped mussels. This shellfish is native to New Zealand, also known locally by the Māori name, kūtai. As one of New Zealand's most significant seafood exports, this meaty shellfish is known throughout the world for its large, colourful shell and its affordability.

Ngāi Tahu Seafood's own Greenshell™ mussels are grown suspended from long-lines supported by floats in the pristine coastal waters of the Marlborough Sounds. Long-line aquaculture is regarded as the most efficient, economic and environmentally-friendly method of farming mussels. Following around 18 months of growth, the Greenshell™ mussels are harvested, heat shocked, opened then quick frozen in half shell form or as meat without shell, ensuring the highest standards of food quality.

TAHU brand Greenshell™ mussels are exported to markets in Australasia, Europe, Asia and the USA, and are available most of the year.
